Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland vs Once Upon a Time in Wonderland

I'm going to start a new segment to do with comparing stuff from OUAT whether it be characters, episodes, seasons etc. So to start off I'm going to be comparing Once Upon a Time In Wonderland & Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Why? Well, they both have a grown up Alice returning to Wonderland to save it from a new big bad while going on an adventure in the process. Keep in mind this is all opinion based & I'm sure there are those who prefer one over the other & that's cool.
Now we've got that out of the way, let's start off with the story!
Story

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland
Burton's version is more the generic prophecy/chosen one for Alice despite constantly saying throughout it's a dream, which gets real old real fast. This makes the massive 'spoiler' at the end that Alice is in fact the Alice from Alice in Wonderland predictable & doesn't even feel like a twist as everyone saw it coming! I mean, why else would they choose her out of all the Alices in the world with the same blonde hair & blue outfits? I will say it does do well with explaining the world of Wonderland & how it all works like with the calendar which can see the future & the different kingdoms & creatures. Unfortunately, this is also a flaw as a place that supposedly makes no sense seems to have a lot of rules & order! Sorry, that is what bothers me!
But there's another massive problem I have: it takes itself too seriously. It goes into politics and war in a world which is supposed to be full of nonsense! Not only that, but it feels disloyal as it tries to be like the original despite the premise being completely different & not advertising itself as a sequel to the original story. This therefore breaks the spirit of the original book & is what ruins the experience for me when watching it. Not only that, but there are plot holes throughout & lead me to question
I'm sorry, I know I seem to be bashing this movie for what it is, but there are a few good things like the world is interesting, the, but a plot full of confusion, complexity & lack of consistency does not fit with a book which is full of nonsense & simplicity!
Once Upon a Time In Wonderland
This version, while kind of also has a generic quest plot & is serious, it does take more time to have a crazy side that we know & to see the world of Wonderland. When I went it, I expected it so that Alice & Will would fight due to their split personalities but get together by the end, but it actually wasn't that at all! Heck, Alice & Cyrus' romance is possibly one of the healthiest in the OUAT world cos they actually talk about their problems & the future! And I'll admit, it is adorable! Same goes to Anastasia & Will! We even get to see more of the backstories compared to Burton's which makes the characters more developed & likeable, including Jafar, Anastasia, Alice & even Will when he was one of Robin Hood's Merry Men!
But that's not saying OUATIW has it's flaws when it comes to plot. It is very hard to get into at first up to about episode 3 or 4. Honestly, I didn't like it when I first watched it because of the acting, plot & crap CGI, but it changed over time as I watched each episode. But the biggest issue I have is it's only for Once Upon a Time fans. It doesn't do much to establish what's going on or the premise of it's mother show for newcomers. Heck, Storybrooke is only seen twice & there are only a few iconic from OUAT, but only hardcore fans would be able to recognize them. But even with that, it still kept me engaged throughout & it was rather fun to see them small cameos.
Overall, when it comes to story, OUAT's version wins me over. That's not to say it's good, but I just found the journey aspect more engaging & the character growth of the main characters is a thousand times better!
Winner: OUATIW

Now onto something very important in the Wonderland universe: the visuals!
Visuals
OK, it may seem far out to compare a movie & a TV show in terms of visuals because of the quality being very different & being dependent on budget, but I'm judging this one on the style they go for in Wonderland!
OUATIW
Completely ignoring the fact the CGI is pretty bad, the look of Wonderland itself is actually pretty good! We get to see different parts of the world & to their credit they actually look creative. Like the Caterpillar's hideout, the Grendel's home & even the Red Queen's palace. Unfortunately, there are still some issues like the forests look like a generic forest but with tacked on mushrooms & honestly, it's not really that memorable. Even the town where Lizard & Will go to just looks like a normal town which could easily be mistaken for a town in the Enchanted Forest. Might as well go over a bit on Agrabah since it's also pominent & it looks good with the Arabian decor influencing the style, but we don't get to see much of the world. By the way, the inside of the lamps are pretty cool, just. It's unfortunate because it genuinely does take advtange of the world like the Marshmallow quicksand, the dragonflies, that perfumed forest which removes your memories & even Jefferson's abandoned house!
Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland
This version has the classic Burton look we've all come to love. Yes, besides the quality being a thousand times better than OUAT's, I loved the size & scope with it. It reminded me of the Disney movie in a way with the talking flowers, the designs of the characters & even the creative costumes & I love all of it. If there's anything good about this movie, the look of the movie would be on the top of the list!
I also love how it takes advantage of the zaniness of Wonderland like when Alice falls through the rabbit hole & the different kingdoms being creative & colourful. If I did have some issues, it would be it can get creepy at times. I know that's weird to say for Wonderland, but it can get a bit macabre like the grey-ish colour pallette, the severed heads in the Red Queen's river & the Bandersnatch.
But in all, which one is better? Well, in Burton's as well as the scope being better while OUATIW's takes advantage of the crazy side. Honestly, I'm gonna go with Burton's as it reminds me much more of the Wonderland I imagined and the designs are actually much more creative. That's not to say OUATIW has a chance to be creative, but Burton's just sticks with me more! Burton wins this round!
Winner: Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Surely Alice needs to play off some eccentric & colourful individuals! This is the side characters!
Side Characters

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Although, yes, the original characters and personalities are intact & the designs are admittedly pretty cool, a few of them didn't really stick out in terms of personality like the Dormouse, March Hare & the Cheshire Cat. In fact, The Mad Hatter is probably the best out of them & Johnny Deep of course does an over the top performance as you'd expect from him. For that he'd win me over, but the backstory as to why he went mad wasn't all that great to me. Tweedledum & Tweedledee had some funny moments, Bayard the Bloodhound was interesting & I also enjoyed Alan Rickman's performance as Absolem (the Caterpillar) but I thought he was way too serious for a hookah smoking caterpillar in a world full of nonsense. Actually, it feels like they had the wacky personalities to compensate for Alice's weak characterisation (I'll get to that later)& they're not really that developed (again, besides Johnny Depp) especially the White Queen! I love Anne Hathaway, but she just bored me & was the generic nice queen to contrast her sister!
OUATIW
And that's my issue with OUATIW's characters: where are all of them? They barely had any of the Lewis Carroll characters, like where the hell is the Mad Hatter (Jefferson)? He's one of the most iconic characters yet he's only mentioned in the Pilot! And same goes to the Cheshire Cat which is pretty much an extended cameo & Tweedledum & Tweedledee aren't really that bizarre enough nor memorable besides the cheap David Bowie make-up on their faces! And with that said, are the characters like Cyrus, Will, Lizard & Anastasia bad? No! They're more in the realm of complexity rather than eccentricity. I'm not including Anastasia as a villain because she becomes a heroine by the end. Honestly, going in, I really couldn't stand her! Seriously, her fish pout, annoying put on upper class accent & wooden acting really grated me & it seemed like she was a Regina rip-off! That is until 1x08! All what I said before was just a demeanour and she had & it's revealed she's always regretted leaving Will for power partly thanks to Cora. Will himself is more the straight man who at first is cynical but eventually realizes how much Cyrus means to Alice. And their friendship is kind of fun! Cyrus was also a good fighting partner for Alice as well as a love interest & to be fair he also values family as he & his brothers do everything in their power to save their mother Amara (Jafar's mentor/lover/serpent staff) Lizard was rather cool & badass, before she was needlessly killed off & the Grendel had a tragic backstory with his wife's passing, before he also had to be needlessly killed...yeah! All the ones which had potential die! And it annoys me when they were interesting & memorable!
This one was a hard one, but I'm gonna go for OUATIW as they're better written, better developed & honestly played off better with Alice! Sorry to blast Johnny Depp, he is good, but that's only one out of so many side characters which didn't really stick with me!
Winner: OUATIW

So what's Wonderland without a little bit of threat? This is the villains!
Villains
Now with this there are 2 different main villains as well as the Jabberwocky!
Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland
The Red Queen, played by Helena Bonham Carter. Yes, it could be argued that she's a weak & two dimensional character, but her personality fits with the world of Wonderland, and she can be intimidating as she has the Jabberwocky in her grasp. The fact that she has tantrums over stupid little things also shows how intimidating she can be, like her opening scene where she has a frog killed because he ate her tarts! I also want to add that I love her design, as it fits her personality as snobbish and is literally big-headed, as well as fitting the world of Wonderland with the craziness! And despite being cliched, I found her much more memorable.
OUATIW
Jafar...sure he may be hammy but oddly enough it's enjoyable. I haven't seen much of Naveen Andrews besides some Lost episodes, but he seems to do a pretty good job with the material he's given. Now, I know you could arguably compare him to Rumplestiltskin (which I'll also do eventually despite an obvious winner) with the tragic backstory involving their fathers, gaining magical powers etc, but the thing is he had a reason behind his goals: he wanted his father to know how it felt being hurt by someone you love. But that doesn't mean he sticks with me. In fact, I found him to be the kind of funny where it's unintentional cos of how silly it was.

The Jabberwocky in both projects take completely different approaches. The Jabberwocky in Burton's only has 2 lines (voiced by the amazing Christopher Lee) and I find is more of a plot device for Alice to defeat, even if his design is pretty cool & his presence is intimidating. Meanwhile, OUATIW's is a more psychological villain, in fact she's not even a dragon! She gets into people's heads to break them down before eventually killing them. Yes, her design may be pretty unusual & not that creative, but she's still pretty cool. But for which one that pays more tribute to the Lewis Carroll's Jabberwock (yeah, both ofv these made a mistake calling him a Jabberwocky when that was actually in a poem) Burton's wins me over as well as having the scary design & more intimidating prescence.
Both do have good villains, but I'd rather have villains that stick with me, and Burton's version does that! Like I mentioned, Helena Bonham Carter does a great performance & her personality fitted quite well with the world of Wonderland, despite the inconsistencies in the story!
Winner: Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Now to end this, it's probably best to look at Alice herself!
Alice
Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland
Mia Wasikowska...I'm just gonna say it she bored me to death! She never made me care about Alice mostly because she never expresses any emotion throughout. Sure she may do some brave things & kind of grow by the end, but God is it slow paced & I never get invested. She always thinks it's all a dream which is intolerable. I think it's because Burton focuses too much on what she isn't rather than what she actually is due to Alice being raised in a conformist society. He has done that right like Edward Scissorhand & Beetlejuice, but with Alice, she just fails to impress me. Ironically, even though they attempt to portray her as not being a product of her time, her emotionless reactions make her a product of her time & makes her archetypal dated! Even if Mia tries, she just has the same permanant frown on her face throughout almost the entire movie. Sorry Burton fans, I don't like this Alice!
OUATIW's Alice
OUATIW's Alice on the other hand is actually a fighter! She's not just doing what she does for the sake of it, she's doing it partly for her love & to get her father to finally believe her. Heck, her arc is surprisingly tragic  and you get why! She goes to Wonderland as a child only for nobody to believe her when she goes back home, returns years later only for her boyfriend to supposedly get killed, returns to London where her father essentially replaced her & her mother, is forced to get married despite her protests & mourning Cyrus & to top it all off, gets sent to an asylum by her father after being forced to by her stepmother! And through it all she still manages to be interesting & complex. And she's actually smart and snarky too! But just because she has all these positive qualities, does it mean she doesn't have flaws. And my main issue is she's just too committed to Cyrus. But even then, she still manages to be interesting & pretty badass! Yes, I called Alice a badass!
Overall, it's pretty clear OUATIW's Alice wins me over!
Winner: OUATIW
And OUATIW wins with 3-2! Honestly, this was a much more difficult one to compare than I thought after rewatching both! I used to think Burton's blew OUATIW out of the water, but that was before I went back & noticed all the flaws as I really paid attention to the eye candy the movie had. That's not to say both are good, they're OK really, and I'd probably recommend to watch them at least once.

Top 10 Best & Top 5 Worst Once Upon A Time Season 3 Episodes!

When it comes to seasons in OUAT, normally there would be the amazing episodes or the ones which are just filler. For Season 3, this was possibly the best season I've seen of them so far! The character development was a thousand times better than season 2, there were less plots or new characters which felt unecessary and the main characters became much more interesting. Heck, the ones on the worst list are just OK and there are 10 in the best list because there are so many I love! If I didn't include one, they were good but didn't stand out to me compared to those on the best list!
Best
10) Dark Hollow! After 7 episodes of not seeing Storybrooke due to the Neverland plot, this episode felt very refreshing as we saw beloved characters left behind like Belle, Archie & Granny just to name a few. I also loved how Belle contributed much to the plot & we got to see a sweet & memorable friendship between her & Ariel. The return of the Darling brothers was also greatly done & I felt they were much more interesting than Greg & Tamara in terms of people working for the Home Office & I loved seeing Wendy again after her appearance in 2x21. Yes, the love triangle was stupid between Emma/Hook/Neal, but at least Emma called them out which was the right thing to do. Overall, a great episode with great writing, better pacing & acting!

9) The Heart of the Truest Believer. The first season 3 episode was personally an enjoyable one for me. It immediately established it was going back to the season 1 formula of character development & it was very refreshing as season 2 had so many plot points & barely any character development. I also loved the funny moments as we got to see everyone at loggerheads after everything they've been through, as well as Rumple's rather sexy black leather outfit (to me anyway haha!). Overall, an amazing episode to start off the Neverland arc & season 3!

8) Bleeding Through. What I loved about this one is that we got to see some character development in the relationship between Mary Margaret and Regina, and if felt so nice to see them. Rose McGowan returning as Young Cora was great as she of course does a great performance as we get to see what happened between her & Snow White's father & Princess Eva, as well as revealing who Zelena's father was, which by the way, I'm glad they didn't make some huge reveal! Yes, that Rumple/Zelena make out scene was very disturbing to watch, but it showed Rumple's brain is a dangerous weapon as he manipulated her feelings for him! Overall, a well paced, written & interesting episode to watch taking a paranormal side!

7) Think Lovely Thoughts. I love this episode for seeing more of Rumple's backstory (as a very cute child) with his father as we finally saw how much of an ass he really was! Robert's performance was of course, amazing as Rumple (well, it always is, no surprise there!) Stephen Lord's performance as Malcolm was great & heavily reminded me of Rumple with the mannerisms as well Marilyn Manson being very creepy as the Shadow. This episode made me understand why Rumple feared Pan (his own father) so much & actually made loads of things in past episodes make sense like Rumple not wanting to go through the portal in 1x19! With episodes like this, it's probably best to think lovely thoughts to yourself so you don't have to be stuck in Neverland!

Click to view full size image6) Quiet Minds! This episode would be the final one for Neal Cassidy as unfortunately, he would be the series regular to pass away. But, despite that, I can't hate this episode. The emotional stakes & acting was amazing, especially from Jennifer, Michael, Robert & Emilie. I loved the addition of Lumiere as Henri Lubatti does a great performance reminiscent of Jerry Orbach and I loved his creative design. It felt nice to see Belle & Neal be in the spotlight after so long & I love how Belle contributed much to the plot & that she used her smarts to her advantage. Yes, I still thought Mary Margaret was an idiot with the whole Zelena thing, but that was only for 2 minutes & she found out later on. Overall, one of the saddest & most emotional episodes from the show!

5) Snow Drifts/There's No Place Like Home. I decided to count these as one since they treat it like a TV movie & it's hard to separate them as 2 different episodes as the plot is so tight-knitted together. What I loved most was the emotional stakes and character development from Emma as she finally embraces her family & home in Storybrooke through a fairy tale time travel adventure which makes her realize how much she really loves her parents. I loved seeing FTL Rumple again in action after so long, the overall tone was action packed yet. And my OTP finally got married which was the icing on the cake for me after an amazing season! Overall, a great finale with amazing writing, action, romance, humour, emotional stakes & I can't wait to see Storybrooke get frozen in season 4!

4) Ariel. After Adam and Eddy finally decided to add the red head mermaid into the show, the pay off is amazing! The tone really reminded me of a fairy tale like in season 1, both in visuals & writing as we got to see a fun crossover with The Little Mermaid & Snow White. I thoroughly enjoyed Joanna Garcia's performance as Ariel as she brought a sweet side to her as well as unselfish. Yes, the romance between her & Eric is rushed like the movie but hey! She's a teen! I think that justifies itself! Lana's acting as Ursula was also fun to watch & I loved the emotional scenes in Neverland as everyone revealed secrets in order to save Neal, also starting the arc on Mary Margaret wanting another baby leading into 3B. Overall, an amazingly written episode as The Little Mermaid finally becomes a part of OUAT's world!

3) Save Henry. What I love about this episode is that in a way, it's an apology to the bad implications OUAT previously had on the subject of adoption. It was amazing to see that Regina had always loved Henry despite all the terrible things she's done & had always wanted to be a good mother to him. This was also shown in the Neverland scenes as she's the one who manages to save both him & everyone from Pan...until the body switch loophole. I also loved seeing Emma bond with the lost boys as she was just like them once & finally seeing Neal & Rumple reunite & reconcile properly after everything. Lana Parrilla's acting was simply fantastic in both the flashbacks and Neverland scenes. Overall, this was a great way to end the Neverland arc before returning to Storybrooke!

2) A Curious Thing. This episode genuinely surprised me. I thought it was going to be a filler Snowing episode, but in reality, it was an emotional roller coaster. The Storybrooke scenes were action packed & fast paced filled with amazing development from Regina's part as well as Henry finally remembering everything after so long. I also loved Emma taking advantage of her powers . Might I also add that the visuals were also fantastic like the forest where Glinda was banished to & the castle when Snow, Charming & Regina cast the curse & it was nice to see more of mind boggled Rumple as well as Neal returning briefly. I think what I love most is that it made me appreciate Snowing again after 2 seasons of pointless & boring flashbacks. This one definitely showed love can be a curious thing!

1) Going Home. Was it really a surprise? After gushing over it in my review, I can safely say this is still my favourite one in season 3. The emotional stakes were very very high, the writing was the best I've seen of Adam & Eddy & I loved the character development, . The flashbacks were well done & I loved the way they took a new turn by doing vignettes instead of a cohesive plot. Rumple's role in it was perfect even if he had to die to save everyone (well, before he was revived in Quiet Minds) with Robert's performance being the best I've seen of him so far & seeing Regina grow from hating Emma in season 1 to giving her & Henry a good life was just amazing! The ending twist with the new timeline was a perfect way to start the next chapter for the second half of the season & overall, it easily could've been mistaken for a season finale! With episodes like this, it's no wonder OUAT feels like home to me!

Before we look at the worst list, let's take a look at the honourable mention!
Click to view full size imageHonourable Mention: Kansas! Why this is on the honourable mentions is because the Oz flashbacks being weak. It felt disappointing to barely see any of Oz after all the build up in 3B & Dorothy was in a way, wasted. Or at least her story since The Wizard of Oz is a classic. However, what keeps this episode from being on the worst list is the Storybrooke scenes. They were very well done, as they were action packed, with great emotions from Rumple & Belle's engagement/reunion, Regina defeating her sister with light magic & Mary Margaret finally giving birth after so long. As I said, the flashbacks may be weak, but not as weak as the ones on the worst list. Looks like this one shows Dorothy was better off staying in Kansas all along.

Worst
5) The Tower! This episode really could've been something great, but it disappointed me. However, there are a few good things like the dark themes, the visuals, seeing things from Charming's perspective & like I said the opening nightmare! But the main problem I have is the execution & Rapunzel's storyline & character being very very weak which really made the episode suffer for me. In fact, they slowed the Storybrooke scenes down, and honestly, the fear theme should've been saved for Frozen now that Elsa will be joining in season 4! Overall, a well intentioned yet poorly executed episode with bland flashbacks.

4) Good Form. This one I don't really think of when it comes to season 3. Yes, it may show more of Hook's backstory, but in a way, we knew his brother was going to die & become a pirate! Also, the CS pandering is really annoying & uneccesary, especially that kiss which pretty much served no purpose other than fanservice. And Rumple wasn't in it either so it already suffers as a result! I also didn't like that the David being poisoned plot was still dragging along & how he still didn't tell his wife the truth over it. Overall, I don't really care for it nor do I really think there's much to say positively. This pirate's life is not for me!

3) Lost Girl. This is the first case in the season where Snowing flashbacks can be pointless. Yes, they may have the theme of belief, but it didn't do much as we knew what was going to happen in that Snow wouldn't kill Regina & they slowed down the Neverland plot. The Neverland scenes were still good with Emma realizing her true self in an actually well executed & emotional scene, Rumple & the vision Belle as we get a glimpse of his bad relationship with his father & seeing everyone band together, but this one is just a skip it for me.

2) The New Neverland. This one shows the flaws of flashbacks which are completely useless and pointless. In this case, it's Snow & Charming's honeymoon as she tries to kill Regina by going to Medusa. See the problem? They have done the 'Snow trying to kill Regina' plot so many times & it's obvious they're not going to as they're both alive and well in Storybrooke & it's just pointless! There are some good things like the Storybrooke scenes & Jared & Robbie's performances as Pan & Henry in the body switch, but the flaws in this are much bigger compared to Lost Girl.

1) The Jolly Roger. I was going in with low expectations when first I heard about this episode & it gave me exactly what I thought I was going to get. Everything was jumbled up with too much going on at once & honestly, I just didn't care. The biggest issue I have is Hook's characterisation! They completely forgot what he did in S2 & make out CS as an epic love story when it's a one sided crush from (yes they're canon now so I better get used to it!) They only used Blackbeard to benefit his plot, Ariel was wasted & the CS pandering was intolerable! Even more than Good Form & that's saying a lot! However, there were a few good things like the scenes with Emma & Regina & seeing her be friendly with the Charmings! It's not Dreamy bad & I get CS fans enjoy it, but for me it's my worst season 3 episode.

There's No Place Like Home

Like I said, this follows immediately after 3x21 as Emma has to find a way to get out of prison, give the ring to Snow and go to the troll bridge. However, as Snow tries to use the dust on Regina, she ties her up and burns her at the stake...or so she thinks. Using a bit of the dust, Snow manages to turn herself into a ladybug and calls out for the Blue Fairy to change her back. With the ring in tow and the only way to get to the docks is through the troll bridge, this time round Snow tricks them by using sand and pretending it's dust and giving her money. Giving him the ring back, Emma witnesses her parents falling in love and realizes Storybrooke is her home. Rumplestiltskin put them in his vault when she manages to wield magic to get back, but not before revealing to Rumple his son dies and telling him to drink a memory loss potion so he can't let his sacrifice be in vain. Back home, Emma reunites with her family at the party where they announce their son's name is Neal, obviously named after Henry's father/Rumple's son. And a happiness montage occurs with Emma & Hook getting together, Mary Margaret & David with their newborn son, Regina, Robin & Roland spending time together and.....RUMBELLE GETTING MARRIED! After everything that has happened between them I am so glad they're the ones to tie the knot! And it was well executed, the vows were beautifully written and I loved how intimate and private it was! And Belle's wedding outfit was beautiful! Unfortunately, Regina's happiness doesn't last long as Robin & Marian reunite thanks to Emma bringing her to the present to save her life without knowing who she was. Looks like the Regina & Emma war will start again! And to make matters worse, an urn Hook touched in the vault is with them and releases none other than...Queen Elsa of Arendelle from Frozen!
This finale was amazing! The acting was amazing, the writing was amazing, the attention to detail was amazing, the emotional stakes were high and it just gave me that warm feeling, especially during the wedding, which made me bawl like a baby! Yes, it was obvious in some bits Ginny was pregnant & they used a body double as they reused scenes from Snow Falls, but oddly enough, they were well integrated! And I loved Emma has fully embraced her family and that Storybrooke is her home after so long of seeing her tough exterior & I surprisingly liked that Hook was the one to stop it and grow up, even if I still don't like CaptainSwan! I felt so sorry for Regina when her happiness was gone unintentionally thanks to Emma. But I can't really blame her, if anything I blame Robin because he immediately ignored Regina for his now alive wife, without even thinking of her feelings!
That cliffhanger...wow! I just want to say I adore Frozen and I can understand why Adam and Eddy want to add it into the show! Now, I was very surprised they added Elsa as the movie is only 6 months old (as of May anyway!). But do I think it's a bad idea? Absolutely not! If anything, the character fits perfectly in the OUAT universe being a misunderstood young woman, but by the looks of it, she's in the Let It Go stage judging her sassy walk & the way she takes her gloves off & destroys her former prison. I can't wait to see what direction they'll take and this finale was a very satisfying way of ending such an amazing season and I cannot wait more than ever for season 4!
